Feels Trip: Meet Me in St. Gallen Review
6:46 AMMAJOR SPOILER COMING UP
The movie already started four minutes before we came in. Cinema Centenario was pitch-black except for the screen unlike big cinemas with blue lights guiding you to your sit.
The scene started (or what we caught up to) with Celeste (Bella Padilla) resigning from her advertising job. Celeste's character already appealed to me, with her being headstrong and screaming her thoughts out loud. Then comes Jesse (Carlo Aquino), following Celeste around. The movie is now revealed to have a huge Celeste and Jesse Forever (2012) reference.
90% of the scenes were at night - conveying a feeling that they cannot be seen together and when the sun rises, their time together was over. The whole story had a span of 6 years - but only 3 nights were highlighted. In 6 years that they have known each other, they only saw one another for 3 nights. But each night was memorable - probably more than a typical date night with someone you just met.
That's the thing - is there even a possibility for you to meet someone in a coffee shop with the same name as your favorite movie character who will seemingly fit your love story?
As someone who hates uncertainty and rarely takes risks, I wouldn't enjoy a night out with a random stranger. I probably wouldn't drink with someone I just met or even let him drive me home. It was the thing that kept me grounded to reality with the whole movie.
But then again, that's just me me and not Celeste.
The story is a bit like Serendipity - they met randomly, enjoyed the young night together, then eventually needed to leave and go back to their own reality. Few years later, they saw each other again and realized how much that single night affected their feelings and themselves.
But the difference with Serendipity is they didn't end up together. YES I KNOW, A MAJOR SPOILER.
What I hated the most about the movie though is Jesse cheating. He. Had. Sex. With. Celeste. But. He. Was. Engaged. HE WAS ALREADY ENGAGED!!! The part that made me cry was when Jesse wasn't answering his phone when his fiancee was calling the morning after they had sex. How big of an asshole can you be.
The whole movie was an emotional ride for me and thumbs up for Cinema Centenario for bringing this feels trip movie in an intimate theater like theirs.
